NEWS:OCEANS & GDO Team Up for “Parent/Child SUP & Golf” Event

For the past five years, GDO has helped men’s fashion magazine OCEANS put on a series of events for parents and their kids. The third of these events, held Sunday, May 29, featured a “Surf and Turf” theme, with SUP (stand-up paddleboarding) at Chigasaki Beach in the morning and a 9-hole round of golf at GDO Chigasaki Golf Links in the afternoon.

Parents and kids enjoy an exciting SUP experience together

10 pairs of parents and kids participated in the event, with the kids ranging in age from 5 to 12. After checking in at the golf course, participants walked over to Chigasaki Beach, where they enjoyed a beginner-friendly morning of SUP courtesy of local surf shop Hosoi Surf & Sports. The sparkling waters made for a perfect counterpart to the heart-pounding thrills.

A wonderful afternoon together for parents and kids

Leaving the sea behind and returning to the golf course, parents and kids changed clothes and recharged with a delicious lunch. The afternoon began with golf lessons, where kids listened intently to instructors. Then it was time for a round of real golf, where each parent-kid team took turns hitting the ball as they competed for fabulous prizes. This was “real” golf: no handicaps, no mulligans. Even so, the main goal was for everyone to have fun.

Three generations of the Inaba family have fun golfing at Chigasaki

Mr. Inaba, a participant from Tokyo, reminisced at the end of an all-too-short day of fun. “I remember the one time my dad took me to play golf as a kid, he took me here, to what was then Chigasaki Golf Club.” He looked at his son sitting next to him. “Now I’m the dad, and it’s a deeply moving experience to take my own son out for a round.” The 10-year-old boy smiled warmly: “It was my first time doing SUP and playing golf. I couldn’t hit the ball that well, but it was still lots of fun.”

OCEANS editor-in-chief Toshiki Ebe

“This event truly embodied our magazine’s ‘surf & turf’ theme,” said OCEANS editor-in-chief Toshiki Ebe, summing up the day. His sunburned face beamed with pride. “It was great to see parents and their kids spend quality time together, enjoying both the sea and golf in the same day.”
